At the back of the car, the rear chrome trim will feature the words ’40 years UAE limited edition’.

If you want to see hot cars, the Detroit Auto Show is certainly the place to do it. But last night, two thieves gave a very different meaning to the phrase “hot car.” The two daring bandits made off with a BMW 7-Series sedan valued at $140,000.
The stolen sedan belonged to BMW and was one of 19 vehicles the automaker brought to the auto show for executives and others to use at events related to the car show. The two thieves took the 7-Series as it was being put on a vehicle carrier last night to be transported to the New Jersey home office.
According to a report from the Associated Press, authorities told television stations WJBK and WXYZ that the search continues for the $140,000, gray BMW 7-Series sedan with plates from New Jersey after the vehicle was stolen in front of downtown Detroit’s Westin Book Cadillac hotel.
The police say a valet from the hotel drove the flagship BMW sedan from the garage and handed the keys over to the car carrier driver. When the driver turned his back, the two bandits leaped in the car and drove away.
According to the AP report, the sedan has BMW Assist technology, which has the capability to track a stolen car. In other words, the 7-Series is likely to show up eventually, but it is impossible to say what kind of condition it will be in by the time it is found.

The upcoming 2013 BMW i3, the Bavarians’ all-new rear-wheel-drive EV hatchback, was out in Chicago recently, evidently for a promotional video. The car was fully undisguised, rolling silently down Chicago’s Wacker Drive.
The i3 will be the first model of the new BMW i brand when it arrives in 2012, and will be powered by a 170-horsepower, all-electric motor mounted over the rear axle. Juice comes from a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack, also mounted beneath the floor.
The drive set up gives the car a flat floor, meaning there’s more than enough room in the small package for passengers and cargo. There are bench seats front and rear, which each accommodate four people. There’s also room for just over seven cubic feet of cargo.

The * * * * 2011 BMW Alpina B7 XDrive is the bad girl in BMW’s family — likely to show up at holiday dinners a little loud, a little drunk, brandishing a new tattoo and a boyfriend who just might steal the silverware.
She hasn’t had a dull moment in her life, and you won’t either as long as she’s around.
The B7 is Alpina’s response to the knucklehead who looks at BMW’s powerful and pricey 7-series and asks, “Do you have anything that costs a little more and goes a little faster? Something that pins me to the back of my seat longer and harder when I floor it?”
With a 500-horsepower twin-turbo V8, prices that start at $125,000 and because it’s subject to the federal gas-guzzler tax, the B7 is an expensive date, but an experience you won’t forget.

From its deep-blue custom paint to a modified engine that produces more torque than some trailer-hauling medium-duty trucks, the B7 uses every trick at BMW and Alpina’s command to overwhelm you with luxury and power. Modified by Alpina, a band of former German typewriter makers who needed a new way to make a living when the word processor came along, the B7 combines brute force, advanced systems and an elegant interior.
Prices for the 2012 B7 start at $122,600 for a rear-drive, short-wheelbase model. All B7s come with a 500-horsepower twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 that produces a chest-constricting 516 pound-feet of torque and a six-speed automatic transmission. Adding all-wheel drive to the short-wheelbase model raises the base price to $125,600. Long-wheelbase B7s go for $126,500 for rear-drive and $129,500 for the xDrive AWD model. The B7 competes with super sedans like the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG and Porsche Panamera turbo.
I tested a well-equipped 2011 B7 xDrive SWB that stickered at $136,850. The 2011 B7 is mechanically identical to the 2012 model you can order from any BMW dealer. All B7s are built to order. BMW sold just 750 over two years with the previous-generation car. It takes about six weeks for a car to be built and shipped to the U.S. East Coast, two months to the West. Alpina tweaks the engine, transmission and suspension, then loads every possible feature into the B7.
A BMW factory builds the car, and the automaker backs it with the same warranty and free maintenance as a regular 7-series. Alpina’s changes to the car are as subtle as 500 horsepower ever gets. A casual observer could mistake the B7 for a 7-series with extra aerodynamic trim and daring 21-inch tires and 20-spoke wheels. BMW’s in-house M sport tuning group builds high-performance versions of the automaker’s mainstream models by reducing weight and adding horsepower. There is no M version of the 7-series, because the big luxury sedan doesn’t lend itself to light weight. That opened the door for the B7, which uses turbochargers to maximize torque for raw acceleration.
Alpina’s been up to this mischief in Germany since 1961, when the founder of typewriter maker Alpina Business Machines developed a racing carburetor for the then-new BMW 1500 sedan.
Alpina modifies a range of BMWs in Europe. The B7 is only the third car it’s sold in the U.S. It follows a version of BMW’s Z8 sports car and a B7 based on the previous 7-series. There’s no telling if more are coming. Keep your fingers crossed.
The B7′s sticky tires wrench at the asphalt as the car clings to curves, accelerating with the adaptive transmission’s fast, firm shifts. Alpina’s patented steering-wheel-mounted shifter buttons have the best look and feel in the business.
The V8′s deep rumble announces that this isn’t just another 7-series. The broad torque band taps an endless flow of power for acceleration at all speeds. The ride is surprisingly quiet and comfortable, given the B7′s aggressive staggered-width Michelin PS2 tires. New springs reduce ride height by 0.7 inches at the front and 0.4 at the rear. The suspension, steering, transmission, stability control and other systems can be set for anything from comfort to a very aggressive “sport plus.”
The steering is fast, firm and weighted for drivers who expect firm feedback. The all-wheel drive and stability control seamlessly direct torque and manage the brakes for maximum control.
The B7 xDrive gets worse fuel economy than the Porsche Panamera turbo and Mercedes S 63, but it beats the Flying Spur. The federal gas-guzzler tax adds $1,300 to the price. The interior of the car I tested was swathed in acres of oyster and black nappa leather and accented with piano black trim. The steering wheel and shift knob were wrapped in suede that caresses your hands. The interior offered plenty of room. The front seat could use more storage.
A deeper center console would remove one of the few shortcomings from this raucous wild child of the 7-series lineup.

The current-generation BMW 7 Series, or F01 to you Bimmerphiles, was launched in 2009. After the German luxobarge hit the streets, Audi and Jaguar decided to launch their own redesigned flagship sedans. Exclusive: BMW developing customizable LCD gauges for refreshed 5 and 7 Series models. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has had one for a few years, and Jaguar-Land Rover recently fitted units to its all-new XJ and updated Range Rover. Now BMW is getting ready to offer its own fully configurable LCD gauge cluster on the next-generation 5 Series and 7 Series models.
Co-developed in Munich and BMW’s Technology Office in Mountain View, CA, the new gauge cluster will display the standard dials for speed, revs, fuel and temp, but can be configured to show additional navigation, telematics and infotainment data depending on the driving mode. Comfort and Sport settings will tailor the display to suit conditions, possibly placing the tachometer front-and-center in Sport mode, along with providing shift lights and other more driver-centric information.
A BMW engineer we spoke with made it clear that BMW doesn’t want to rely on digital representations of analog gauges. Instead, the automaker is looking at the display as a blank canvas with which it can display a variety of information in an innovative way. However, while consumer customization will be available, BMW believes that keeping the user-tweakability to a minimum is key for ease-of-use and general readability.
Expect the new dash to appear on the refreshed 5 and 7 Series within the next two years.
